Design Engineer

Under the general direction of the Design Group Manager and Senior Engineers, the Design Engineer
serves as a member of a cross-functional project team. This position is responsible for determining and
implementing electrical designs that safely meet customer requirements, as well as cost and scheduled
objectives.

Responsibilities:
As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the overall electrical layout and design of control panel
systems. The primary responsibility for this role is to ensure proper development and completion of
electrical schematics that conform to safety and quality standards. In this position you will be required to
support multiple projects of varying complexity.

Key Responsibilities

Design:

• Research
Research, understand, and specify commercially available components for use in a total system.
• Hardware/Software Design
Demonstrates proficiency in control hardware/software design.
• Network/Security Design
Demonstrates understanding of network/security design and/or proficiency in network/security
design.
• Panel Drawings
Understanding of 3-phase and 1-phase drawings. Determine power circuits, AC/DC circuits, digital
circuits, and analog circuits effectively.
• Create Drawings
Ability to apply electrical design to identify wire sizes, colors, and numbers. Can import and setup IO
sheets, build and develop effective CAD blocks for the layout and schematic designs.

Project Management:

• Continuous improvement
Interfaces with management, sales, project managers, and engineers on process improvements for
project management processes and documentation.
• Resource management
Identifies appropriate resources needed and develops a schedule to ensure timely completion of
projects focusing on targeted outcomes.
• Kick-off/Project planning
Conduct internal and external Kick-off meetings with all key stakeholders in order to announce the
start of the project, review the overall project plan and gain consensus.
• Expectations/Alignment
Ensure a common understanding by setting expectations in accordance with the project plan,
aligning the stakeholders and team members.
• Leadership
Builds mutual trust and encourages respect and cooperation among team members. Keeps team
members well informed on project objectives, milestones, and schedule.

Implement the approved actions and workarounds required to mitigate project risk events to
minimize the impact of the risks on the project.

Manage changes to the project scope, project schedule, and project costs using appropriate
verification techniques to keep the project plan accurate, updated, reflective of authorized
project changes as defined in the change management plan and facilitate customer acceptance.
• Control scope, schedule, and budget
Maintain project controls that accurately reflect completed work against project plans, schedules and
budgets, and ensure user/management involvement at appropriate milestones.
• Startup/Commissioning
Ensures startup plan is well defined and understood by client, project team, and contractors. Ensures
acceptance criteria is presented and approved by client.
• Client relations
Ensures users/customers are provided professional, courteous, and timely support and service.
Identifies problems and coordinates appropriate corrective action.
Project Execution
• Onsite
Provides onsite oversight and/or support to project team to meet client schedules and expectations.
• Quality
Provides oversight and/or support to project team to ensure all quality aspects of project are being
met.
• Acceptance testing
Ensures appropriate FAT/SAT documents are created and completed during acceptance testing, and
ensures client acceptance is achieved.
Communication
• Management/Admin
Provides appropriate and timely internal feedback (project status, invoicing, resource needs, issues,
escalation, etc.).
• Client
Provides appropriate and timely client feedback (project status, schedule, milestones, etc.).
Demonstrates professionalism when communicating with client.

Demonstrates effective group presentation skills.

Documentation:

Produce effective and accurate written documents, reports, technical memorandums in support of
projects.

Effectively use standard project documentation (kickoffs, risk registers, RAILs, schedules, meeting
notes, closeout forms, etc.) throughout the project life cycle.

Supports sales with documentation and presentations to existing and new clients.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Associate’s Degree in Electrical/Electronics Technology or related field, or commensurate
    experience.
  • AutoCAD
  • Experience with PCs, Operating systems and MS Office.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, communication, documentation, presentation and computer
    skills. Works in a team based environment and exchanges technical information with management,
    technical support personnel, and equipment vendors.
  • Must be self-directed and resourceful, detail oriented and able to manage multiple priorities.
    Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate customer focused attitude.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental
    regulations.
  • Experience with Disconnect 3-phase panels, 120V and 24VDC control panels, MCC Specification,
    modular control enclosures and operator interface terminals is preferred.
