Responsibilities:
The Engineering Technician serves as a member of a cross-functional project team and has responsibility to independently execute tasks on Projects, Professional Service Contracts and Service Calls. This position is responsible for the engineering, design, integration, programming, and troubleshooting of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and Industrial Networks for systems to support productivity and/or quality improvements for our clients.
Essential Functions
- Interpret detailed specifications for automation and control systems
- Research, understand, and specify/apply commercially available components for use in a total system
- Troubleshooting
- Systems troubleshooting 480V and below
- Instruments troubleshooting & calibration support
- Develop detailed system documentation for the construction and installation of key system equipment
- Understand fundamentals of drawing set documentation including but not limited to I/O layout (both digital and analog), identifying AC and DC sections of the electrical design, wire numbering per PDA specs, fusing, grounding, and I/O device types (both digital and analog).
- Specifically, be able to identify components that appear on Process and Data Automation’s standard equipment lists including how, where, and why those particular part numbers are used
- Edit existing drawing sets at the direction of the Electrical Manager, Technicians, or Engineers
- Develop drawing sets from scratch using existing company templates
- Ability to take I/O spreadsheets to I/O drawings
- Edit existing and develop new company templates at the direction of the Electrical Manger
- Write operations manuals at the direction of Electrical Manager and/or Project Engineer(s)
- Support equipment and system submittal efforts
- Program many different types of high level industrial control equipment such as PLCs, PACs, and DCS controllers
- Configure local PLC I/O systems
- Insert standard PLC code sections and/or UDIs as directed by Project Engineer including understanding how to take standard code, duplicate and test it, and understand how it works
- Understanding how to make and test simple PLC changes (remapping I/O, adding or removing an interlock to auto logic, etc.)
- HOA controls write/address/modifications, data collection blocks insertion/config, and scaling
- Assist Project Engineers and Management with the development of standard code blocks and/or UDIs
- Program many different types of operator interface devices from simple, embedded controllers to multi-node, intense PC based human-machine interface systems
- Fully develop simple and complex HMI screens
- Read PLC code to correctly address HMI screen data
- Commission simple PLC-OIT communication networks, initially single node and later larger-scale
- Support the Commissioning of automation projects including main controller(s), operator interface(s), and all related field devices
- Review system final design with project engineer and commence project
- Inspect field wiring, matched to print sets
- Responsible for I/O checkout including verification of proper operation of limit switches, photo eyes, prox switches, solenoids and actuators, lamps, etc.
- Commissioning of control networks at the direction of a Project Engineer (DNet, CNet, Ethernet, etc)
- Configure field devices, complete device checkout forms (Instruments)
- Commissioning of motor control panels and VFDs
- Red-line field drawings
- Verification of as-built drawing sets
- Responsible for the assembly of final system & project documentation including files, electronic files & folders, physical media, and manuals where required

- Two-year technical degree or equivalent experience preferred

- Travel required, domestic and international (10-30%)
