Controls Engineer

Our Controls Engineering group specializes in physical automation system design, programming, and commissioning. Our dedicated Digitalization Group connects automated equipment and systems to the business environment including protected recipe systems, data collection and reporting, and data historian implementation.

Responsibilities:

The Controls Engineer serves as a member of a cross-functional project team and has a responsibility to independently execute medium-sized tasks and projects and Professional Service Contracts.  This position is responsible for the engineering, design, integration, programming, and troubleshooting of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and Industrial Networks for systems to support productivity and/or quality improvements for our clients.

Essential Functions

  • Interpret detailed specifications for automation and control systems.
  • Research, understand, and specify/apply commercially available components for use in a total system.
  • Develop detailed system documentation for the construction and installation of key system equipment.
  • Understand fundamentals of drawing set documentation including but not limited to I/O layout (both digital and analog), identifying AC and DC sections of the electrical design, wire numbering per PDA specs, fusing, grounding, and I/O device types (both digital and analog).
  • Specifically, be able to identify components that appear on Process and Data Automation’s standard equipment lists including how, where, and why those particular part numbers are used.
  • Edit existing drawing sets at the direction of the Electrical Manager, Technicians, or Engineers.
  • Develop drawing sets from scratch using existing company templates.
  • Ability to take I/O spreadsheets to I/O drawings.
  • Edit existing and develop new company templates at the direction of the Electrical Manager.
  • Write operations manuals at the direction of the Electrical Manager and/or Project Engineer(s).
  • Support equipment and system submittal efforts.
  • PLC and HMI programming:
  • Proficiency with multiple control system (PLC) platforms.
  • Proficiency with multiple supervisory (HMI/SCADA) packages, both general graphics/interface and advanced software capabilities.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Ethernet Network design and deployment including hardware, software, and security.
  • Participate in Automation Projects and complete automation design for clients.
  • Coordinate with other engineers and equipment suppliers to ensure design intent and cost-effectiveness of delivery are achieved.
  • On-site support for design reviews, consultancy, installation, start-up, and troubleshooting and provide remote assistance for customers with technical support to meet lead time and quality of customer‘s requests.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Ethernet Network design and deployment including hardware, software, and security.
  • Executes functional tests after automation equipment is completed to ensure quality and lead time align with project timelines.
  • Startup Verifications (FAT/SAT documentation).
  • Evaluate, analyze, and troubleshoot existing automation and control systems.
  • System Design: Ability to evaluate and select control system strategies to meet customers’ needs.  This involves matching technology to project needs and existing plant systems.
  • System Design: Research, understand, and specify commercially available components for use in a total system.
  • Programming – Design and Structure

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. EE/EECT degree is preferred; however, all relevant education and/or experience will be considered.
  2. Firm commitment to efficiently delivering solutions.
  3. Effective written and oral communication skills.
  4. Ability to evaluate and select control system strategies to meet client needs.
  5. Ability to design systems to a satisfactory state for bidding, purchase/procurement activities, and project inception. This includes system calculations, AutoCAD design, and experience with vendor solicitation.
  6. Proficiency with multiple control system (PLC) platforms.
  7. Proficiency with multiple supervisory (HMI/SCADA) packages, both general graphics/interface and advanced software capabilities.
  8. Demonstrate proficiency with PCs, operating systems, and MS Office applications.
  9. Demonstrate a customer-focused attitude.
  10. Project management skills.
  11. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Travel required, domestic and international (10-30%)
  2. Must have a valid driver’s license
